Cricket Formats and Tournaments

The first step in cricket betting is understanding the three formats — T20, ODI and Test. Each format has a different pace, wicket pressure and level of uncertainty. Knowing these differences makes it easier to choose which markets to enter.

T20 cricket is the fastest format — a match can turn around within 20 overs in a matter of moments. Since BPL and IPL, which are popular with fans in Bangladesh, are both played in this format, T20 markets are naturally the most popular. In ODI cricket, strategy runs deeper over 50 overs — live odds shift when the match situation changes mid-game. Test matches are a five-day contest; a draw is a valid result here, so the market structure is different from ODI or T20.

On the international calendar, the ICC T20 World Cup and bilateral series — especially Bangladesh Tigers matches — attract particular attention from bettors. On the domestic side, BPL is the most appealing tournament for cricket fans in Bangladesh. Night matches in Dhaka bring the same heat to bip taka's betting markets as you find in the stadium.

Alongside cricket betting, bip taka also has a large collection of slots and live casino games. If you want to try new games, take a look at the bip taka slots section.

T20

The fast-paced 20-over format. BPL, IPL and the T20 World Cup are played in this format. The match can swing on any single ball.

BPL IPL T20 WC

ODI

The 50-over one-day match. Well suited for strategic betting — there is room for the match to change direction in the middle stages.

One-day ICC

Test

The long five-day format. A draw is possible — so three-outcome markets are available. The preferred format for patient bettors.

Betting on Football and Other Sports

As well as cricket, bip taka also offers football betting. In football, a match lasts a fixed 90 minutes and a draw is often possible — so the "1X2" or three-way market is different from cricket. Like T20, live betting in football is very active — odds change quickly after a goal.

In cricket, except in Test matches where a draw is possible, there are usually two outcomes — in football there are three. New bettors should keep this difference in mind. Each sport has its own rhythm; it is wise to gain experience in one before moving on to another.

  • Cricket has two outcomes (T20/ODI) and Test has three — football always has three outcomes
  • In football, in-play odds change on goals; in cricket, on wickets and overs
  • In both sports, a multi bet combines multiple matches in a single bet

Popular Betting Markets

The markets below are the most commonly used for cricket matches at bip taka. Having a clear understanding of each market makes betting more enjoyable.

Match Winner

The straightforward market of which team will win the match. Two options in T20 and ODI, three in Test (Team A, Team B, Draw). The best place for beginners to start.

Toss Market

You can bet on the toss result before the match starts. Since it is a pure 50/50 chance, the odds are usually close to even.

Top Batsman

Which batsman will score the most runs in the match — this market is available separately for each team.

Total Runs Over/Under

Whether the total runs in a specific innings or the whole match will go above a set number — the team name does not matter for this market.

Multi Bet

Combining selections from multiple matches into a single bet. You win only if all selections are correct, and the odds multiply — see the example in the odds section below.

Handicap Market

One team is given a virtual run or wicket advantage or disadvantage. This narrows the gap between the two teams' strength and makes the market more balanced.

Varied markets throughout the season

Not just before the match starts — in live betting, new markets open at the end of each over. Odds are different before and after the first wicket falls, which is what makes cricket betting more varied than any other sport.

Rather than trying all markets at once, it is wise to stick to match winner and total runs markets at first. Betting is for entertainment — play within a set budget.

How to Read Odds

Betting sites display odds in three formats: decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same probability — only the way they are written differs. The example below shows all three formats side by side for Team A winning.

Format Odds for Team A winning Odds for Team B winning
Decimal 3.00 1.80
Fractional 2/1 4/5
American +200 -125

Example 1 — Team A win market

Say Team A's odds are 3.00 (decimal) / 2/1 (fractional) / +200 (American). A ৳200 bet returns ৳600 in total if Team A wins (৳400 profit + ৳200 original stake). If Team A loses, the ৳200 is lost.

Example 2 — Favourite Team B

Team B is the favourite — their odds are 1.80 (decimal) / 4/5 (fractional) / -125 (American). American "-125" means you need to bet ৳125 to win ৳100. A ৳200 bet returns ৳360 in total if Team B wins (৳160 profit + ৳200 original stake). Because Team B is the favourite, the return is comparatively lower.

Multi bet example: Selecting three matches at odds of 1.40, 1.80 and 1.90 respectively gives combined odds of 1.40 × 1.80 × 1.90 = 4.79 (approximately). A ৳100 stake returns ৳479 if all three selections are correct. If even one is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost.

Three formats in plain language

  • Decimal: Multiply your stake by this number to get the total return — the simplest format.
  • Fractional: "2/1" means ৳2 profit for every ৳1 staked; the original stake is returned separately.
  • American (+/-): A "+" sign means how much profit you make on a ৳100 bet; a "-" sign means how much you need to bet to make ৳100 profit.
  • bip taka uses decimal format by default — but you can set your preferred format.
Live In-Play

Odds Shift Wicket by Wicket

In-play or live betting is the most active part of cricket betting. After the match starts, odds are recalculated after every wicket, every boundary and every over. For example, if Team A scores 140 runs in 15 overs but wickets keep falling, their odds of winning may shorten — or lengthen again if they score quickly.

Decisions in live betting need to be made quickly because odds update in moments. A good approach is to watch the first few overs of the match before choosing a market — take your time to read the situation rather than rushing.

Betting is a form of entertainment. Play for enjoyment, not in pursuit of winnings. See our guide to learn more about responsible gaming.

Useful Tips for Beginners

  • Start with one market: Focus only on the match winner market at first. Entering many markets at once can feel complicated in the beginning.
  • Set a budget: Decide in advance how much you will spend on betting each week. It is best not to go beyond that amount.
  • Choose markets that match the format: Total runs markets work well in T20; keep the possibility of a draw in mind for Test matches.
  • No rush in live betting: You do not have to place a bet just because odds are changing fast. Make decisions with a clear head.
  • Be careful with multi bets: Even if the odds look attractive, getting all selections right is difficult. Start multi bets with fewer selections.
  • Do not chase losses: If you lose a match bet, do not place a larger bet on the next match trying to recover your losses.
  • Decimal odds are simpler: Decimal format is the easiest for beginners to understand — use it when you are starting out.
  • bip taka VIP Benefits: Regular bettors who join the bip taka VIP program can earn weekly cashback.

Common FAQs

For new bettors, T20 is the easiest format to start with — matches are short and results come quickly. ODI takes a bit more time but gives more room for strategy. In Test matches, a draw is possible, so you have to choose from three outcomes — which makes it slightly more complex. Watching T20 matches in the BPL or IPL is the easiest way to understand the markets.

In live cricket betting, odds can update after every ball — changes are especially noticeable when a wicket falls or a big boundary is hit. At the end of each over, odds are recalculated based on the run rate. So in live betting, it is better to read the situation carefully rather than rush into a decision.

Most Bangladeshi bettors find decimal odds easier — just multiply the stake by the odds to get the total return. With fractional odds, you have to calculate the profit separately. American odds use "+" and "−" signs differently, so they may take a little getting used to at first. bip taka uses decimal odds by default.

You can build a multi bet by combining two or more selections. The more selections you add, the higher the combined odds — but if even one is wrong, the entire bet is lost. For beginners, it is safer to stick to two or three selections. Example: 1.40 × 1.80 × 1.90 = 4.79 combined odds — a ৳100 bet returns ৳479 if all three are correct.

Both are T20 format, so the market types are broadly the same. However, IPL has more teams and more matches, so the markets are wider. BPL is a local tournament, so Bangladeshi bettors are familiar with the teams and players. Both offer match winner, top batsman and total runs markets.
